Previous analysis will hopefully show you that there are many avenues, some which will be more ethical than others. However, for complicated ethical decisions, the answer is not always easy to see, even after all the data has been analyzed. In this particular example, there is no clear decision, which is often the case. The decision that you make will be dependent on your morals and your particular life situation at the time.

First, who defines goodness, well-being, and utility? Should the majority decide and if so, would not this be a conflict of interest? As any engineer knows, measuring outcomes is a critical part of any analysis. Keeping that in mind, how do we measure what the greatest good is and just as important, when do we stop measuring? For example, the use of placebo drugs in clinical trials is a topic of recent intense debate. Many human rights activists maintain that in clinical trials using placebos, it is not ethical or fair for some individuals to receive an experimental drug that could cure a disease, while others are unknowingly given a sugar pill that has no therapeutic benefit.
