As any engineer knows, measuring outcomes is a critical part of any analysis. Keeping that in mind, how do we measure what the greatest good is and just as important, when do we stop measuring? For example, the use of placebo drugs in clinical trials is a topic of recent intense debate. Many human rights activists maintain that in clinical trials using placebos, it is not ethical or fair for some individuals to receive an experimental drug that could cure a disease, while others are unknowingly given a sugar pill that has no therapeutic benefit.
